Anglian Water’s @One Alliance

Who are Anglian Water?

At the heart of the Anglian Water’s @one Alliance sits Anglian Water Services. They are the driving force behind the collaborative delivery model that’s reshaping how we build, improve and futureproof essential water infrastructure.

As one of the UK’s largest Water & Water Recycling companies, Anglian Water’s purpose is to bring environmental and social prosperity to the region it serves through its commitment to Love Every Drop.

But beyond their strategy and oversight, what does Anglian Water really bring to the table?

Anglian Water working collaboratively with the Anglian Water's @one Alliance

Anglian Water is the foundation of the @one Alliance, both a client & one of eight delivery partners that work together to deliver hundreds of projects across the East of England. Anglian Water empowers all eight alliance partners (including themselves) to bring their best thinking, tools and people to the challenges we face. This working relationship is rooted in Anglian Water’s values & this allows & drives efficiencies throughout our projects.

In practice, this means that innovation is encouraged, and safety, sustainability and customer outcomes are the non-negotiables that underpin everything we do. With AMP8 already underway, Anglian Water’s leadership continues to champion smarter, greener, more resilient ways of working to raise the bar for what capital delivery can achieve in a changing environment.

What Anglian Water brings to the @one Alliance

Through its role in the @one Alliance, Anglian Water brings more than the funding and framework –  it brings a wealth of expertise & belief. Belief that by working together, we can achieve more for the communities we serve & if we’re going to build a better future, we need to build it differently. So, here’s how Anglian Water is helping to shape the alliance from within:

  • A clear purpose and long-term vision – setting the course for a water-positive future, aligned to net zero & nature focused solutions.
  • Unwavering safety focus – embedding Safer Every Day thinking into every site, project, and partnership.
  • Bold targets for innovation and carbon reduction – setting a challenge to decarbonise, digitise and deliver smarter than ever before. Working towards a sustainable future.
  • Customer first delivery – placing the needs of households, businesses, and communities at the heart of every decision. By embedding our in-house Customer Experience team within the project team, we ensure that the customer perspective shapes every stage of planning through to on-site delivery.
  • Commitment to collaboration – promoting a one-team culture that breaks down barriers and brings out the best in people, while allowing a clear pathway of communication between our teams & the Anglian Water’s operatives.

Seeing all of this in practice: The Brickhill Copse Emergency

It’s easy to say of the above but it means more when we can use real life examples to showcase the power of Anglian Water & the @one Alliance’s collaborative approach. This approach works brilliantly as at the press of a button, we’re able to jump into action, bring our teams together and deliver projects at any time of the day. And this isn’t shown any more than by the strength of this partnership demonstrated during the emergency response at Brickhill Copse Reservoir earlier this year.

On Friday 25 April 2025, a water main burst at Brickhill Copse in Woburn Sands, putting over 200,000 residents and businesses in Milton Keynes at risk of losing their water supply. It was a high-stakes situation that demanded not only technical expertise, but urgent coordination, innovation and trust.

Within 48 hours, we had teams who had designed, built and installed a custom reinforced fitting to temporarily fix the burst. Simultaneously, a permanent solution was developed, manufactured and delivered on site within just 24 hours. This was really a showcase of everything the alliance stands for:

  • Living our values: The teams didn’t cut corners or take risks. They stopped when needed, reassessed when required and only moved forward when it was safe to do so. Safer Every Day wasn’t just a slogan it was a shared mindset & this was demonstrated here.
  • Innovation and adaptability: The challenges were complex, evolving hour by hour. But the teams collaborative approach with Anglian Water allowed us to design in real time and find smarter ways forward. From the drawing board to delivery, this was problem-solving under pressure at its finest.
  • Trust and collaboration: Success depended on close, honest, real-time collaboration across Anglian Water operations, @one Alliance partners and the wider supply chain. Everyone pulled in the same direction, with the same urgency and purpose.

The Brickhill Copse Emergency

The response at Brickhill Copse wasn’t just about fixing a pipe. It was about protecting people, proving the strength of partnership, and showing how quickly we can act when the stakes are high. This incident reflects how Anglian Water leads not only in planning for the long term, but in rising to the challenges of the moment. The values that define Anglian Water are embedded in every corner of the @one Alliance.

These behaviours weren’t just shown on this project, they are shown up in every toolbox talk, every design review, every late-night emergency fixes and the everyday decisions that make our sites safer, our work better and our people proud.

Looking Ahead: AMP8 and the road to 2030

Now looking ahead, we face a new chapter, defined by bigger ambition, greater complexity and the need to deliver more. Once again, Anglian Water is leading from the front, challenging all of us to step up, think differently and deliver capital programmes that are fit for the future.

Some of our shared priorities for AMP8 include:

  • Decarbonising delivery: with a strong focus on low-carbon materials, methods and digital solutions to design out emissions at every stage.
  • Enhancing resilience: investing in networks and infrastructure that can withstand the pressures of climate change, population growth and shifting demand.
  • Driving digital transformation: from digital twins to data-led insights, we’re scaling up the tech that helps us predict, plan and protect.
  • Improving customer outcomes: ensuring every project delivers not just performance, but value and confidence for the people we serve.
  • Championing equality, diversity and inclusion: making our alliance stronger by reflecting the communities we work in and creating opportunities for all.

This is no small task. But with Anglian Water’s leadership & integration as a delivery partner in the @one Alliance, the belief is there to deliver it. Together, we’re not just building infrastructure, we’re building resilience, legacy & a region that’s ready for whatever comes next.

Keep an eye out over the coming weeks & months as we’ll be spotlighting the other seven delivery partners that help shape the Anglian Water @one Alliance into what it is today.
