Since 1980, Barhale has grown into one of the UK’s largest privately-owned civil engineering and infrastructure specialists. Originally established as a tunnelling contractor, Barhale now delivers design, construction and maintenance services across water, transport, energy and the built environment sectors.
With over 45 years of experience, Barhale now operates as a Tier 1 partner on major frameworks and Alliances, combining technical expertise with collaborative delivery methods to support critical national infrastructure.
Barhale has actually been working with Anglian Water since Asset Management Period 3 (AMP3 2000-2005) and is a founding member of the @one Alliance. Built to deliver complex water infrastructure projects collaboratively, the Alliance was the perfect opportunity for Barhale to apply its expertise in civil engineering, tunnelling and sustainable construction.
In the intervening decades, strengthened by its direct delivery model, Barhale has helped Anglian Water deliver resilience, carbon reduction and innovation across the East of England.
Everyone working in the @one Alliance lives by Anglian Water’s purpose to bring environmental and social prosperity to the region we serve through our commitment to love every drop by following its three core values that together we build trust, do the right thing and are always exploring.
However, each of our partner organisations brings their own values, purpose and mission to the Alliance, with their staff contributing towards our collective @one Alliance culture.
Barhale’s mission is to create sustainable solutions that deliver on customers’ needs and are Engineered for Generations.
They are guided on this mission by eight core values, which have been embedded in the business since the beginning: Safety, Communication, Quality, Integrity, Team Spirit, Caring, Trust and Pride. These values underpin everything at Barhale; prioritising safety and environmental stewardship while fostering strong relationships built on trust and integrity.
Being a collaborative Alliance, all our partners work across all of our schemes, but each partner contributes their expertise in their area of specialisation. Barhale has been instrumental in helping deliver a huge section of work on the Little Whelnetham to Wherstead (LRT) section of Anglian Water’s Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA).
This 36km section of the 330km SPA pipeline was delivered for SPA by the @one Alliance and was worth over £70m. Designed to increase water resilience across the Anglian Water region, the finished pipeline will transport up to 55 million litres of water a day from wetter areas of the North into drier areas in the South and East of the region.
As principal contractor on the LRT section of the pipeline, Barhale has incorporated carbon-saving measures such as reusing excavated material, reducing compound areas by 50% and using Beet Pads (large areas of existing hardstanding reserved for storing sugar beet) for laydown areas.
All of these efforts have been to help Anglian Water reach its net-zero carbon pledge, with Barhale also having clear commitments to sustainability and efficiency.
For Barhale, their priority is the successful delivery of work along their major frameworks with water companies across the country.
To achieve this, Barhale will be focused on enhancing network resilience and improving water quality through innovative, low-carbon solutions and driving sustainability through adopting nature-based and low-build solutions wherever possible.
In the Anglian Water world, Barhale will be looking to continue their work delivering vacuum sewerage systems, sustainable urban drainage schemes (SUDS) all while delivering our usual schemes encompassing our thousands of km of pipelines and hundreds of treatment works across the region.
At Barhale, it’s all about people. People are at the heart of everything they do and it’s what sets them apart. Barhale’s success is built on the strength and commitment of its teams.
Their value-led culture, rooted in Safety, Integrity, Caring and Team Spirit, guides every decision. By investing heavily in training, development and wellbeing, Barhale knows it can make its people the key to their success.
This people-first philosophy, combined with a collaborative mindset and technical expertise, is what makes Barhale a trusted delivery partner and a key part of the @one Alliance.
As one of the founding partners in the Alliance, Barhale have played a key role in shaping the Alliance model that is now recognised as an industry exemplar, including as part of the government’s construction playbook!
Over the last 20 years, Barhale have proved themselves day-in-day-out by bringing a culture of collaboration, innovation and trust to the Alliance and has helped deliver some of Anglian Water’s most complex and critical infrastructure projects with a focus on safety, sustainability and efficiency.
Barhale have always championed the Alliance’s guiding principles of true collaboration at every level and its teams have contributed technical expertise in civil engineering and tunnelling while fostering an environment where people can learn, grow and innovate together.
In @one, Barhale’s legacy will always be the projects they’ve delivered and the contribution they bring to the way the Alliance operates: fair, values-led and focused on delivering better outcomes for customers and communities.
Barhale are proud to have helped set the standard for collaborative infrastructure delivery in the UK and beyond.
