Doing my work experience at Anglian Water gave me a direct insight into how all aspects of the company work together, and how water is treated so that it comes out of our taps ready to use, something we usually take for granted.

Doing A level geography, an important aspect of our course looks into the water cycle and treatment of water, so I decided spending a week at Anglian Water would be interesting and beneficial for my studies.

I got the opportunity to see many sides of the business, as I spent time with schedulers, customer care agents, and the tactical operations team. Each day was something different and I was made to feel very welcome by everybody.

I had the chance to listen to in to phone calls, sit in on the presentation of a proposed engineering project, and see how all of the operations carried out by Anglian Water are managed and maintained so that they run smoothly.

I even had the chance to spend a day in the field with a repair team as they were tapping a new connection.

My week at AW allowed me to develop skills useful for my own career in the future, as I learnt how to communicate and work with others in a business environment, problem solve, and improve on my own knowledge of treating, transporting, and supplying water.

Overall, my work experience was very insightful, interesting and engaging, and I appreciate the opportunity greatly.

I worked in various placements throughout my week of work experience including, Networks, the lab in Huntingdon, Scientific, Leakage, Water Regulations and a tour of Heigham Water Treatment Works.

I was paired with a number of different people according to my placement area and also spent time with the Community Education team that visit schools.

I learnt how water pipes work and how chemistry is incorporated into it, by seeing samples being taken and then being analysed in the lab. I really like science so this was really interesting for me. I would encourage others to apply for a role in Anglian Water because it represents what a career could like in a big company and how that company works.

I would say this a great choice for others wanting to take part in work experience here because all the people I came into contact were friendly and I was lucky that I spent time with a number of different people so I could see what environment they work in through the different placements.

It was really interesting and I learnt a lot

I personally like the opportunity of having Work Experience people visiting us in Water Supply. We are very proud of the service we provide and we love to demonstrate that passion to any audience. As far as I’m concerned, my input is small as the students spend most of their time buddied up with Technicians. My involvement is all around the health and safety, safeguarding and legal formalities associated with a placement.

Before the placement, I complete risk assessments, school/collage questionnaires, information sheets to parents/guardians, safeguarding arrangements and provided proof employee liability insurance.

Keeping Technicians and Students safe is the number one priority so you cannot experience every aspect of life as a Works Technician on Water Supply but you can get very close to it in a couple of weeks.

I believe it’s worth the huge effort on our part for the right work experience candidate.
