Operational

Water is essential to life, and our Operational Teams are at the heart of delivering it – safely, reliably, and sustainably. Every day, our people work behind the scenes and on the frontline to ensure millions have access to clean water while protecting the environment for future generations. Whether it’s supplying fresh drinking water, maintaining infrastructure, or driving innovation in water recycling, these roles are critical to keeping our networks running.

We have Operational roles with

Ensuring a reliable clean water supply

Some of our teams focus on delivering safe, high-quality drinking water to our customers;

Leakage

Leakage specialists track water from source to tap, identifying and addressing leaks or high consumption to drive efficiency and reduce waste.

Restoration

Restoration teams respond rapidly to supply interruptions, using advanced engineering techniques, such as tankers, emergency pumps, and generators, to restore service while maintaining top water quality and customer communication.

Networks

Networks teams keep clean water flowing by detecting and repairing leaks, upgrading our huge network of pipes, and tackling water emergencies, all while providing outstanding service to our communities.

Supply

Water Supply teams are responsible for the safe, compliant operation of critical infrastructure. They operate and maintain water treatment sites and assets, ensuring their long-term health and reliability.

Protecting and recycling water for the future

Other teams focus on the water recycling side, ensuring that wastewater is effectively removed, treated and safely returned to the environment.

Water Recycling Operations

Our Water Recycling Operations teams operate and maintain assets such as sewage pumping stations, vacuum systems, and sludge treatment centres.

Maintenance

Our Maintenance teams ensure long-term efficiency by developing asset strategies, providing data-driven insights, and implementing condition-based monitoring to prevent failures. They manage operational risks through smart decision-making and use future insights and horizon scanning to address emerging challenges proactively.

Vacuum Operations

Vacuum Operations team maintains the reliability of vacuum sewerage systems by investigating failures, implementing long-term solutions, and contributing expert maintenance input to improvement projects. They set proactive maintenance plans and ensure team safety through effective traffic management strategies.

LGV Drivers

LGV Drivers are responsible for moving the by-products of our treatment processes (commonly known as sludge) to be converted into Biosolids. Whilst our tankers trawl the region completing proactive maintenance jetting sewers and drains. Jetters and tankers are on hand 24/7 to help take the pressure of the sewer network when an something has failed is or down for maintenance. Most importantly they provide valuable support when the sewer network is overloaded to help minimise the risk of flooding and pollution.

Intensive Leakage Investigation Technician

Hear from Ian

“I came across Anglian Water when I was employed as a contractor working on the leakage contract. I saw first-hand how much training and investment they give to each employee. I also liked the idea of working on more advanced equipment and being part of the Intensive Leakage team.

Every day is different here. Some days I work by myself, and sometimes we go out as a small team to find hidden and hard-to-find leaks.

“We’re like a big extended family. Everyone looks out for one another – we’re focused on safety, wellbeing and work-life balance.”

As for the training, in a word, it’s excellent. We have multiple training sites across our region and I’m impressed by the amount of investment. We have a fantastic training rig of a water main set up that’s linked to a computer so you can see how opening and closing valves can cause damage to our water network.

We have training centres in colleges and, on several sites, we’ve made and buried a complete set-up of water main pipes for training.

Every day is challenging, but the satisfaction I get far outweighs the efforts it took to get there.”

Hear from Lee

“One of the main attractions of Anglian Water for me was the benefits. Especially the pension and healthcare – there’s also the job security.

My role in Anglian Water has always involved pressure water jetting. It’s what we use to clear the majority of blockages caused by things like fats and non-dissolvable wipes. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of resolving issues that can cause problems for properties and people.

The flooding back in 2005 in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft was very traumatic for everyone affected. Anglian Water pulled in resources from all areas to help people who were unfortunately flooded. It was challenging for us all, but I was working with some wonderful colleagues.

“I’ve been involved in everything from rescuing distressed animals through to using my first aid training in road traffic accidents.”

Most of our work is preventative maintenance but we’re always on hand to respond to emergency work when needed. Our job is to keep the sewers running free which prevents flooding and pollutions, protecting the environment, wildlife and the property of our customers.

I have many happy memories – hopefully with many more to come.”
