Welcome to Anglian Water

Finding the Right Role

All of our current opportunities are advertised on the Search and Apply part of our Careers Website. You can browse roles by location, job type, or area of the business to find something that matches your skills and interests.

We know it is extremely rare that someone would meet every requirement perfectly. If a role sounds like a good fit and you can demonstrate relevant skills or transferable experience, we’d encourage you to apply. We’re interested in your potential as well as your experience. We’d encourage you to include a covering letter with your application, as it gives you the opportunity to clearly highlight your transferable skills and bring your experience to life beyond what a CV alone can show.

Internal and external candidates are all welcome to apply. The application process may vary slightly depending on whether you’re applying from inside the organisation or joining us from elsewhere, but every application is considered fairly and consistently.

Tip – You can apply for more than one role if it’s a good match for your skills and experience!

Applying - CV & Application Guidance

Writing Your CV

What we look for

We’re interested in the skills, experience and behaviours that are relevant to the role you’re applying for. This might come from previous jobs, education, volunteering, or other experiences. Clear examples of what you’ve done and how you’ve done it are more useful than long lists of duties.

CV Length

Aim to keep your CV Clear and focused. For most roles, two pages is usually ideal but if you are earlier in your career one page works just as well.

Keep it clear and Simple

  • Use Plain language – no need for jargon
  • Focus on your most relevant experience
  • Bullet points are easier to read than long paragraphs
  • Check your spelling and grammar before submitting

Transferrable Skills Matter

You don’t need to have done the same job before to be a strong candidate. Skills such as communication, problem‑solving, teamwork, customer focus, safety awareness and adaptability are valuable across many roles.
If you’re changing sector or returning to work, help us understand how your skills apply to the role you’re interested in.

A Final Tip

Your CV doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to help us understand who you are, what you’ve done, and what you could bring to Anglian Water.

Using AI during your Application

Using AI to Support your Application

We recognise that candidates now use AI tools to support with job searching, CV writing and application preparation. If AI is used well it can be a helpful way to structure your thoughts, improve formatting and highlight relevant experience.

Your application should always reflect your own skills, experience and achievements.

We want to understand who you are, what you’ve done and what you can bring to Anglian Water. If your application is relying too heavily on AI, your application may feel generic, making it harder for us to get a genuine understanding of the person behind the application.

Our advice for using AI effectively

  • Use AI to help structure and organise your information. AI can help you improve the layout of your CV, check spelling and grammar and suggest ways to present your experience more clearly.
  • Tailor your application to the role. Use AI to identify key themes from the job advert, but ensure the examples and evidence you include come from your own experience
  • Make it personal. Review and edit any AI generated content so it reflects your own voice, personality and career journey
  • Check for accuracy. Always make sure your application is factually correct. You are responsible for submitting a true and accurate application.

Be Authentic

The strongest applications are those that clearly demonstrate your genuine experience, achievements and potential. We encourage you to use AI as a tool to support your application, not replace it.

Remember, we are interested in you, your experiences and what makes you uniquely suited for the role.

Reviewing your application

Whats involved in shortlisting?

Once adverts close (or as they’re received, for some roles), our recruitment team and hiring managers carefully review applications against the requirements of the role.

We use a fair and consistent approach to assess skills, experience, and behaviours. As part of this process, we also use a Recruitment AI Tool to help organise and highlight relevant information across applications.

AI is used to support decision‑making, not replace it, ensuring applications are considered consistently and objectively.

A recruiter will always review every application to decide an outcome.

As we often receive a high number of applications, we’re not able to progress everyone to interview. If you’re shortlisted, we’ll contact you (usually by email) to let you know what happens next. Everyone who applies will be kept informed of the outcome.

We’re really grateful for the level of interest in our roles, at busy times this can affect timelines, but we’ll always let you know where things are up to.

If your application isn’t shortlisted this time, it doesn’t mean you won’t be a good fit for future opportunities at Anglian Water.

Interviews

If you’re shortlisted for an interview, you’ll either receive a phone call from our team to book in an interview slot that is suitable for you or you will receive an email inviting you to self‑schedule an interview slot through your Workday candidate home account.

Booking your Interview

You will either receive a phone call from us to book in your interview or you will be invited to book a slot.

To book your interview slot online:

  • Open the email invitation and follow the link to our career platform, Workday
  • Log into your candidate account
  • View the available interview dates and times
  • Select the slot that works best for you and confirm

Once booked, you’ll receive email confirmation containing further information about your interview, the job description, any preparation information you need to complete for the interview (if required) along with any online joining links or location details.

Interview Preparation

Preparing for your Interview

We want you to feel as comfortable as possible so you can perform at your best. Here are some simple steps that can help you prepare:

  • Take time to re‑read the job description and role requirements. Think about which parts of your experience best match what we’re looking for and how you can explain this clearly.
  • You may be asked to talk about situations where you’ve demonstrated key skills or behaviours.
  • Look into what we do, who we serve, and what matters to us can help you feel more confident during the conversation.
  • Interviews are a two‑way conversation. It’s a good idea to prepare a couple of questions you’d like to ask about the role, team, or working at Anglian Water more broadly.
  • We’re interested in honest responses and understanding how you think, approach challenges, and work with others.

On the Day

Arrival

  • If you are interviewing in person allow plenty of time to arrive at the location so you are not causing unnecessary stress
  • If in person bring any documents with you that have been requested (ID, Qualifications etc)
  • If virtual set yourself up in a quiet, distraction free space
  • If virtual check your technology and join a few minutes early to ensure all links work on your device

Dress Code

We would like you to represent your true self at the interview and we would encourage you to wear what you feel comfortable in, that’s suitable for the environment you are applying to. In most cases this is likely to be professional, but not always formal.

Right to Work

You may be asked to bring Right to Work documents with you to your interview. This request will be in your email invite. Right to Work documents are necessary to ensure we are compliant with government legislation.

Which documents to bring depends on your nationality and what kind of permission you have to work in the UK.

  • If you have a full UK passport, can you please bring this with you. Your passport can be out of date.
  • If you have a non-UK passport / BRP / eVisa, can you please bring this with you. We can obtain the share code at a later date.
  • If you do not have any of these, and are a UK national, we will need to see a full birth certificate (including at least one of your parents’ names), and proof of national insurance number. This can be a P45, P60, National Insurance card, or an official letter from HMRC which shows your NI number.
  • Please note, if the name on your passport or birth certificate is different to the name you are now known by, we will also need to see proof of name change. This can be through either marriage certificate or deed poll.

Using the STAR Method

When answering competency based interview questions the STAR method is a very useful technique. This allows you to structure your response to the interview question and also include all of the important parts.

Situation

Describe the situation or event you were in (Set the scene) include information on what was happening or where you were working?

Task

Explain what was needed and what were you responsible for

Action

Focus on the actions you took to positively affect the outcome. Ensure particular attention is spent on this to explain your thoughts and motives and focus on what you did specifically.

Result

You are the star of the story, make sure the panel know what actions you undertook and why. Explain what you learned from the outcome and what you would do differently if in that situation again.

Adjustments & Support

We are committed to creating an inclusive recruitment process where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

If you require any adjustments or additional support at any stage of the process, we encourage you to let us know either when you apply, when you’re invited to interview, or at any point that suits you. We understand that everyone’s needs are different, and we’ll work with you to make sure you feel comfortable, supported, and able to perform at your best.

Please contact the Recruitment team to discuss any support or adjustments you may require or click below for more information on Adjustments.

Use of AI during Interviews

We recognise that AI tools are becoming an increasingly common part of everyday life and can be valuable for research, learning and preparing for interviews. However, during your interview, we ask that you do not use AI tools, prompts, generated responses, or other external assistance to answer questions.

Our interviews are designed to help us understand your skills, experience, and ways of thinking. To ensure a fair and consistent process for all candidates, we want responses to reflect your own knowledge and experience.

Equally, our interviewers will not be using AI during the assessment/Interview. This allows us to engage in an authentic conversation, understand your perspectives and provide a fair and consistent experience for all candidates

Receiving your offer

We’ll call you with the good news

If you’re successful, either your recruiter or the hiring manager will give you a call to let you know we’d like to offer you the role. This is your chance to hear the news first, talk through the role, ask any questions and let us know how you’re feeling about it.

We’ll follow up in writing

After the call, we’ll send you an email confirming the offer and setting out all the details clearly. This email acts as your formal offer, so you can take time to read through everything properly.

Your contract will come next

Your contract of employment will then be sent to you by our Onboarding team. This is the official paperwork that covers your terms and conditions and helps us get everything ready for you to start.

Accepting your contract and starting you pre-employment checks

To move things along, its important that you

  • Accept your contract once you receive it
  • Give consent for us to begin the necessary pre-employment checks

These checks need to be completed before you can start work, any delays in returning paperwork can slow things down, so responding promptly really helps.

We aim to keep this process as smooth and transparent as possible, and we’ll guide you through anything we need from you along the way. Once everything is complete, we’ll confirm your start date and get ready to welcome you to Anglian Water.

What to expect from your Pre-employment checks

Before you can start with us, there are a few checks we need to complete. These are a normal part of joining Anglian Water and help us make sure we’re meeting legal and regulatory requirements.

Right to work check

Everyone who joins us must complete a right to work in the UK check. It’s really important that the information you share on your application is accurate, as this helps avoid delays later in the process.

Other checks

Some roles also require additional checks. Which ones apply will depend on the nature of the role and may include things like:

– Criminal record checks (DBS)

– Financial checks

– Security checks

– Employment or HMRC references

If any of these apply to you, we’ll explain exactly what’s needed and guide you through the process.

We’re here to help

If you’re unsure about any part of the checks, or something doesn’t seem clear, you can contact our Onboarding team at any stage. They’re there to support you and help things run as smoothly as possible.
