Glossary

Our handy glossary breaks down common water industry language to help you explore our apprenticeship roles with confidence.

Water Treatment

The process of cleaning water to make it safe for drinking or other uses. This can include removing contaminants, bacteria, or other impurities from the water.

Water Recycling Treatment

This is the process of treating and reusing water that has already been used, such as wastewater or sewage. While it’s vital for sustainability, the process can sometimes involve dealing with odours and waste materials, including things like sewage. Despite this, it plays a key role in conserving water and protecting the environment.

Wastewater

Water that has been used in homes, businesses, or industries. It needs to be treated before being safely released back into the environment.

Restoration

The process of getting the water back on for customers when it’s been turned off, such as during emergency repairs or planned work. People rely on clean, safe water every day, so it’s our job to make sure they get it with as little disruption as possible.

When it happens:
Emergency work: If something breaks and we have to shut off the water, we aim to get it back on quickly, even if repairs are still ongoing.
Planned work: We try to keep the water running throughout the job so customers don’t notice any interruption.

Screening / Grit Removal / Settlement

Stages in wastewater treatment to remove solids and particles.

Infrastructure

The physical structures needed to support water distribution and treatment, such as pipes, treatment plants, tanks, and pumps.

Sewer Pumping Stations

Facilities that move wastewater through the sewer network.

Leakage

When water escapes from the water network due to damage or wear on pipes. Identifying and fixing leaks is an important part of water management.

Water Distribution

This term describes the system of pipes, pumps, and other infrastructure used to deliver clean water from treatment plants to homes and businesses.

Assets

An asset refers to any equipment, infrastructure, or resource. These assets are essential to maintaining a reliable water supply and efficient operations.

Tankering

Using water tankers (big trucks that carry water) to deliver clean water to customers when the normal supply is unavailable.

Burst Main

A large pipe that has broken, often causing major water loss and interruptions in supply. Quick repairs are important to restore service and avoid damage
